According to Ogunlana, the current salary structure for legislative aides is based on the civil service template, which does not take into account the unique nature of their roles. Unlike civil servants, legislative aides are political appointees who lose their jobs when their principals leave office.
Ogunlana noted that the lack of job security and clear duties makes legislative aides vulnerable to arbitrary treatment. To address this, he proposed that the National Assembly Service Commission and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission design a distinct salary structure and service conditions for legislative aides.
The Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, Saviour Enyiekere, also emphasized the need for legislative aides to continuously improve their skills to remain effective contributors to legislative business.
