NAZUNS Hails Zamfara Govt Over Restoration of Clinical Allowances

The National Association of Zamfara Universities Nursing Students (NAZUNS) has announced a major breakthrough for nursing students from Zamfara State, as the state government has reinstated the payment of clinical allowances to support their education.

According to a statement released by Kabiru Maishanu Mayanchi, Secretary General of the National Association of Zamfara Universities Nursing Students (NAZUNS), the association stated that:

The National Association of Zamfara Universities Nursing Students (NAZUNS) is delighted to announce that, under the current administration of His Excellency Dr. Dauda Lawal Dare, Zamfara State has officially reinstated the payment of clinical allowances to all Zamfara State indigenes studying Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) across Nigerian universities. This payment begins from their clinical training year

This development is a long-awaited victory for our union, as the struggle for clinical allowances has been ongoing for many years.

Our senior colleagues before us made repeated appeals to the government through ministries and relevant agencies, emphasizing the importance of supporting Medical students just as other states do for their medical trainees.

Historically, the initiative began during the administration of Governor Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura, when students studying medical and health-related courses received scholarships and allowances. The support continued, though inconsistently, under Governor Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi. However, it was completely halted under Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar.

When Governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle came into office, he made initial moves to revive the program, including the constitution of a committee through the Ministry of Health to collect data and verify students across various universities. Unfortunately, despite the groundwork, the initiative was abandoned, and many sets of nursing students graduated without receiving any form of support.

Today, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal Dare, with the tireless efforts and dedication of the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Maradun, this crucial initiative has been revived. This action not only eases the academic journey of our students but also motivates more young people to enroll in Nursing and other medical-related courses, aligning with the government’s broader vision of strengthening the healthcare system in Zamfara State.

As NAZUNS, we are grateful to the State Government, His Excellency Dr. Dauda Lawal Dare, and Hon. Dr. Nafisa Maradun for listening to our long-standing demands and making this a reality.
