The party's South-West leader, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, criticized the plan, citing the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians, with soaring inflation and unemployment.
Ajadi argued that political leaders should be making sacrifices, not demanding pay rises, and that reducing the cost of governance is more urgent than increasing it.
He cited examples from New Zealand, Ireland, and Greece, where government officials took pay cuts during national hardship, urging Nigeria's leadership to emulate such sacrifice.
The NNPP chieftain called on the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to abandon the proposed pay rise, stressing that the nation requires fiscal discipline, not politicians enriching themselves while citizens suffer.
