The attackers, identified as "bandits" from kidnap and cattle-rustling gangs, stormed the village at dawn, catching residents off guard as they prepared for morning prayers.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits broke into a house, killing a farmer named Garba Gambo and injuring his wife. They then herded the abducted women and children out of the village.
The attackers are believed to be from the neighboring Anka district, where they maintain camps in a nearby forest.
Troops stationed in Bukkuyum were unable to respond to the attack due to a swollen river, which made it impossible to cross. Residents of Birnin Zauma are still waiting for a ransom demand from the gang.
This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks in the region. Zamfara state has been plagued by bandit raids for years, with neighboring states also experiencing similar incidents.
