Amnesty International Condemns Unlawful Clampdown on Peaceful Islamic Cleric

Amnesty International has raised alarm over what it describes as "desperate, sectarian, and unlawful" attempts to silence Malam Yahya Masssuka, a prominent Islamic cleric known for his peaceful teachings and advocacy against violent extremism. The human rights organization accused unnamed actors of manipulating government powers to target Masssuka and shut down his schools without evidence of legal violations.

In a strongly worded statement, Amnesty emphasized that such actions violate Nigeria’s constitutional and international human rights obligations, which guarantee freedom of religion, thought, and expression. "This pattern of intolerance aims to suppress differing views and undermine peaceful dialogue," the group stated, warning of a "sectarian gang-up" against the cleric solely for exercising his right to free speech.

Malam Masssuka, widely respected for promoting non-violence and interfaith harmony, has faced increasing pressure despite his documented efforts to counter extremism. Amnesty called on Nigerian authorities to immediately halt the harassment, uphold the cleric’s rights, and ensure the safety of all individuals facing similar intimidation.

"The government must act decisively to protect Malam Masssuka and others from unlawful targeting," the statement concluded, urging accountability for those abusing state power to stifle dissent.

The situation has sparked concerns among civil society groups, who warn that such crackdowns could escalate tensions in a region already grappling with security challenges.
