The initiative is being implemented under a World Bank-funded program in collaboration with the federal government. According to Abba Aliyu MaiBorno, the Head of Metering Project at Kaduna Electric, the company has secured over 120,000 prepaid smart meters to cover its franchise areas, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.
MaiBorno explained that Zamfara State has initially received 5,000 units, with more expected to be deployed in the coming months. The installation exercise is scheduled to run until May 2026, ensuring that all eligible customers are metered within the timeframe. He emphasized the importance of adhering to Kaduna Electric’s safety guidelines when using electrical appliances to prevent hazards and ensure efficient energy consumption.
The community has welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm. Alhaji Sani Banker, a representative of the pilot community, expressed gratitude for the project and assured full cooperation from residents to facilitate smooth implementation. He noted that the meters would bring transparency to electricity billing, reducing disputes and fostering trust between consumers and the power distribution company.
This move is expected to drastically improve service delivery, reduce energy theft, and enhance revenue collection for Kaduna Electric while providing customers with a fair and reliable billing system. The company has urged all beneficiaries to take advantage of the program and report any issues during installation for prompt resolution.
With this development, Zamfara State joins other regions in Nigeria benefiting from modern metering solutions aimed at transforming the power sector. The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar projects in other underserved areas, contributing to nationwide electricity reforms.
