Around 1 pm, the grid’s operational capacity dropped suddenly, cutting off power supply to all distribution companies. Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator confirmed that generation fell to zero megawatts, causing a total blackout.
Every major distribution zone was affected, including Abuja, Eko, Benin, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Yola. At the time of the collapse, all DisCos reported zero load allocation, confirming the nationwide scale of the outage.
Just before the failure, electricity demand had been high in major cities. Abuja DisCo was receiving 639 MW, while Ikeja Electric had drawn around 630 MW, indicating strong urban consumption.
Officials from the Transmission Company of Nigeria, responsible for grid management, have not yet determined the cause of the collapse. Restoration efforts are underway, but there is no confirmed timeline for full recovery. Attempts to get immediate comments from TCN representatives were unsuccessful.
The blackout has left businesses and households in uncertainty, with no clear indication of when normal power supply will resume.
