During a recent visit by the Controller Ortsergah to the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Yobe State, discussions centered on strengthening collaboration between the Ministry and the Nigerian Correctional Service to advance educational opportunities for inmates across all Custodial Centres in the State in Yobe State.
Education remains a vital tool in the reformation and rehabilitation process. Findings from visits to various custodial centres in Yobe State revealed that approximately 95% of the inmate population are youths, many of whom either lack formal education or had previously dropped out of school.
At the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Potiskum, a study centre was established to provide structured learning opportunities for interested inmates.
The Centre Coordinator was directed by the Controller to select and prepare 30 inmates for external examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO). Following intensive academic preparation, 25 inmates have successfully completed readiness requirements and are now prepared to sit for the forthcoming examinations.
The Honourable Commissioner Assoc. Prof. Abba Idris Adam expressed deep satisfaction with the initiative and commended the Service for its proactive commitment to inmate rehabilitation through education. He further pledged the Ministry’s support in facilitating the registration process.
In a landmark development, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has graciously approved the sponsorship of the inmates’ registration for both WAEC and NECO examinations.
This intervention underscores the Yobe State Government’s commitment to inclusive education, youth development, and the successful reintegration of reformed inmates into society as productive citizens. The Nigerian Correctional Service remains dedicated to promoting correctional best practices through educational advancement and strategic partnerships.
