The portal, unveiled by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in Abuja on Monday, is designed to facilitate seamless registration, licensing, and renewal of teachers nationwide.
According to Alausa, the portal will serve as a comprehensive platform for examination scheduling, professional development tracking, and national database for teachers' performance and career progression.
The minister emphasized that the portal is part of a strategic vision for teachers, anchored on five pillars: professionalization, digitalization, accountability, equity, and global alignment.
He also announced the introduction of a mandatory Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework, which will require thorough ethical screening and comprehensive criminal background checks for all teachers.
The Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Dr. Ronke Soyombo, explained that the portal is part of her 100-day action plan to digitize the council's operations.
Soyombo stated that the portal will improve data management, address delays in processing teachers' certificates and licenses, and enhance transparency, expand coverage, and promote efficiency in teachers' professional development.
The TRCN has also introduced a service level agreement to ensure that results of the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) are released within one week.
The council plans to launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered lesson plan generator by October to provide teachers with simulated and contextualized instructional materials.
Stakeholders, including the British Council and the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, have commended the initiative, emphasizing its potential to transform Nigeria's education system and promote inclusive digital education platforms.
