The Ministry of Education announced that all Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) will transition into full-fledged Federal Technical Colleges. Students will be required to take one trade course in addition to general subjects.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the reform seeks to produce a workforce that is both technically skilled and industry-ready.
The 26 approved trade areas include:
- Bricklaying, plumbing, and other construction-related trades
- Woodwork, carpentry, and joinery
- Computer hardware and GSM repair and maintenance
- Refrigeration and air-conditioning works
- Mechanised agriculture and smart agriculture
- Autobody works and automobile mechanics
- Catering and craft practice
- Solar PV installation and maintenance
- Fashion design and garment making
- Livestock farming and animal husbandry
- Fish farming and aquaculture
- Motorcycle and tricycle repairs
- Painting and decoration
- Welding and fabrication
- Beauty therapy and cosmetology
- Creative media and digital media production
- Electronic systems maintenance
- Furniture making and upholstery
- Networking and system security
- Social media content creation and management
- Tiling and cladding
- Automobile CNG conversion and maintenance
- Leather works
Additionally, a new subject called Citizenship and Heritage Studies will be introduced, merging Nigerian history, civic education, and social studies to ground students in national values and prepare them for active citizenship.
