TUC Gives FG 14-Day Ultimatum to Scrap 5% Fuel Tax, Or Face Nationwide Strike

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to withdraw the proposed 5% fuel tax. The TUC described the tax as "economic wickedness" against Nigerians who are already burdened with various taxes and economic challenges.

According to Festus Osifo and Nuhu Toro, President and General Secretary of TUC, the new tax will compound the suffering of Nigerians, cripple businesses, and push millions deeper into poverty. They argued that the government cannot continue to use Nigerians as "sacrificial lambs" for its economic experiments.

The TUC warned that if the government fails to withdraw the proposal within 14 days, they will mobilize Nigerian workers and the masses for a total nationwide resistance, including strike action. They also called on their allies, civil society organizations, and patriotic Nigerians to stand in solidarity with them in this struggle.

This development comes after the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) gave the government a seven-day ultimatum to settle outstanding bridging claims amounting to N100 billion. The IPMAN threatened to withdraw services across the country if the government fails to meet their demands.
