The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Zamfara State Chapter, has ushered in a new era in its leadership following the successful conduct of its State Executive Council election held at the Teachers Training and Development Centre, Bypass, Gusau. On Thursday 18 December,2025 .The election, conducted in a calm and orderly manner, reaffirmed the union's commitment to internal democracy and unity among teachers across the state.
From the early hours, delegates from various local government areas converged at the venue to participate in the exercise. The presence of directors from the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (ZSUBEB), as well as representatives from the national and state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, added credibility and transparency to the process.
Observers and participants alike described the election as free, fair, and transparent. Voting proceeded smoothly, and the peaceful conduct of delegates reflected the growing maturity and discipline within the Zamfara State NUT.
At the end of a keenly contested exercise, Comrade Sanusi Abdullahi Anka, Sarkin Dajin Anka, emerged as the new Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Zamfara State Chapter. He secured an overwhelming victory, polling 252 votes out of a total of 290, defeating two other contestants for the chairmanship.
Speaking after the event, the Executive Chairman of ZSUBEB, Prof. Nasir Garba Anka, Makaman Sokoto South, commended the union for the credible manner in which the election was conducted. He congratulated the newly elected chairman and members of the executive council, urging them to view their emergence as a responsibility to serve teachers diligently.
Prof. Anka advised the new leadership to prioritize teachers’ welfare, unity, and improved working conditions across the state. He also called on the union to support the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly in implementing the Rescue Mission Agenda in the education sector, stressing that collaboration between government and teachers is key to meaningful educational reforms.
In his acceptance remarks, Comrade Sanusi Abdullahi Anka expressed deep appreciation to union members for the confidence they reposed in him. He described his election as a collective mandate and pledged to run an inclusive administration that would engage all teachers.
A seasoned educationist and unionist, Comrade Sanusi traced his career journey from classroom teaching to headship. Before his election, he served as the State Chairman of the Association of Head Teachers of Nigeria, Zamfara State Chapter, where he was known for advocating improved welfare and professionalism among teachers. According to him, his progression through the ranks has given him firsthand insight into the challenges teachers face at different levels.
Comrade Sanusi also used the occasion to appreciate the Zamfara State Government under Governor Dauda Lawal for its commitment to educational development. He specifically thanked the Executive Chairman of ZSUBEB, Prof. Nasir Garba Anka, for his cooperation, support, and open door policy toward teachers and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
He further expressed gratitude to union members, election officials, and well-wishers for their prayers and support before, during, and after the election. He assured teachers that their voices would be heard under his leadership.
Looking ahead, the new NUT Chairman pledged to prioritize teachers’welfare, improved working conditions, and constructive engagement with government and other relevant stakeholders. He emphasized that motivated and well supported teachers remain the foundation for quality education and the successful implementation of the Rescue Mission Agenda in Zamfara State.
