The decision was announced in a joint statement by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Chairman, Comrade Adamu Mohammed Akayago, and Secretary, Comrade Umaru Musa Kuta. The document was shared with journalists in Minna on the day preceding the announcement.
Alongside the retirement adjustments, the state government has lifted the suspension on Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) in schools. These associations will now function under the oversight of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
The NUT hailed the approvals as a significant milestone, reflecting the government’s dedication to improving teacher welfare, professional growth, and respect. The union emphasized that keeping seasoned educators in classrooms longer would preserve institutional knowledge, boost mentorship, and elevate education quality statewide.
The NUT pledged ongoing collaboration with the government to implement the policies and urged benefiting teachers to uphold higher standards of commitment and discipline to advance education in Niger State.
In a related development, the government finalized arrangements for a retreat targeting primary and secondary school teachers eligible for promotion to Grade Level 17. The event aims to facilitate their seamless transition into the civil service structure.
