Abdullahi Garba from Argungu Local Government took second place with a 40-kilogram catch, winning a Toyota saloon car from WACOTT Rice Miles Limited along with another one million naira. Meanwhile, Danlansu Dankani from Jega and another participant shared third place, each presenting fish weighing 34 kilograms. Their efforts were rewarded with a million naira and a motorcycle apiece, further highlighting the festival’s commitment to honoring excellence.
President Bola Tinubu, who graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, praised the festival as a symbol of Nigeria’s cultural richness and unity. In his address, he emphasized the importance of preserving traditions while leveraging natural resources for national progress. He commended Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris for his leadership in organizing the event, noting the improved security measures that allowed for a peaceful and successful celebration. Tinubu reassured the public that the government remains committed to combating insecurity, ensuring that events like the Argungu Festival can thrive as tourist attractions and economic boosters.
Governor Idris, in turn, expressed gratitude to the President for his presence and support. He highlighted his administration’s developmental strides, including infrastructure projects such as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ultra-Modern State Secretariat, road constructions, and healthcare upgrades. The governor also pointed to agricultural initiatives, such as free fertilizer distribution and farming equipment provisions, as evidence of his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises.
The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Sama’ila-Mera, added a cultural perspective, describing the festival as more than just a competition—it is a celebration of heritage. He acknowledged the historical significance of the event, which has been recognized by UNESCO, but also raised concerns over the stalled construction of a permanent fishing center initiated by the federal government. Despite this, the festival proceeded with great enthusiasm, drawing over 50,000 fishermen who eagerly awaited the chance to showcase their skills.
