The Aso Rock Presidential Villa is on track to sever its reliance on the national electricity grid by March 2026, marking a significant shift toward renewable energy. This transition follows the completion of an ambitious solar power initiative, as confirmed by Temitope Fashedemi, the State House Permanent Secretary. During a budget defense session before the Senate Committee on Special Duties in Abuja, Fashedemi outlined the project’s progress, emphasizing its potential to reduce operational costs and enhance sustainability.
The solar installation, finalized in late 2025, has undergone rigorous testing since December. Fashedemi expressed confidence that the system would be fully operational by March, enabling a complete disconnect from the grid. He highlighted the State House Medical Centre as a testament to the project’s feasibility, noting that the facility has operated exclusively on solar power since May 2025 without resorting to backup generators. “The generator at the medical center hasn’t been activated for a single minute since the solar system went live,” he stated. Data showed that the center drew only 3% of its power from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) over a two-month period, with the rest sourced from solar panels and battery storage.
The federal government allocated N10 billion to the solar mini-grid project in 2025, a decision met with public skepticism. Critics argued that prioritizing solar energy for the Villa—while the broader national grid remains unreliable—signaled resignation over resolving Nigeria’s chronic power shortages. Despite backlash, officials defended the initiative. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, pointed to the Villa’s exorbitant annual electricity bill of N47 billion as justification, calling the grid-dependent model unsustainable. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, further cited the White House’s adoption of solar energy as a global benchmark.
The push for renewables also exposed systemic inefficiencies. Fashedemi revealed that testing uncovered widespread overbilling by AEDC, with transformers charging for unused electricity. “We’re using this phase to reconcile these discrepancies,” he explained. The Villa’s outstanding electricity debt, initially pegged at N923 million in 2024, was later adjusted to N342 million after reconciliation—a sum President Tinubu promptly ordered settled.
Once the solar transition is complete, the Villa’s decades-old generators, installed during the complex’s construction, will be phased out. Fashedemi noted that service providers had long urged their replacement, but the solar infrastructure’s performance at the medical center suggested backup generators would only be retained for emergencies. “We believe solar will meet our needs,” he added.
Meanwhile, the budget session took a contentious turn when Senator Kaka Lawan, the committee chairman, lambasted the N127 million allocation for SUV vehicles in the State House budget, calling it “grossly inadequate.” Lawan argued the sum couldn’t cover even a single bulletproof used vehicle, let alone new ones. “It’s unacceptable for a visiting president to be transported in a ‘tokunbo’ car,” he declared, directing the Budget Office to revise the figure upward.
Despite the critique, Lawan praised the State House for its punctuality during the budget defense, urging other ministries and agencies to emulate its professionalism. “Your timeliness sets a standard others should follow,” he remarked.
The solar project represents a pivotal step in Nigeria’s energy transition, though its symbolic and practical implications continue to spark debate. While proponents hail it as a model for sustainability, detractors question its prioritization amid broader infrastructural challenges. As the March 2026 deadline approaches, the Villa’s energy independence will serve as a litmus test for renewable adoption at the highest levels of governance.
