The announcement was made through the Ministry for Internal Security and Home Affairs in a statement signed by Director Abubakar Muhammad Tsafe, who issued it on behalf of the Commissioner. The state government said the work-free day is intended to give Muslim faithful across Zamfara the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah calendar and to offer prayers for the state.
According to the ministry, the holiday is also part of broader efforts to promote peace and tranquility within Zamfara. Authorities are encouraging residents to use the day to pray for the restoration of security, stability, and unity across all communities in the state. The government noted that the new Islamic Year provides a moment for sober reflection, renewal of faith, and collective commitment to peacebuilding at a time when the state continues to address security challenges.
Public and private institutions, including schools, banks, and offices, are expected to observe the holiday. The government urged residents to remain law-abiding during the celebration and to take advantage of the day to foster goodwill among neighbors regardless of religious or ethnic differences.
The declaration aligns with the practice of several northern states that traditionally observe the first day of Muharram as a public holiday to honor the Islamic calendar. The ministry extended its felicitations to the Muslim Ummah in Zamfara and across the country, wishing them a peaceful and prosperous new year. Normal government and business activities are expected to resume on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
