"I've not entered my house in three months," said Halima, a displaced mother of four from Tureta. "We live in fear, not knowing if the next sound we hear will be the bandits."
The attacks have decimated the local economy, with villagers reporting the loss of hundreds of cattle, goats, and sheep. The region's humanitarian crisis has deepened, with many families plunged into extreme poverty and hunger.
Community leaders and residents have appealed to security agencies and state authorities for protection, but their efforts have been overwhelmed by the frequency and severity of the attacks.
Children are among the worst affected, with schools shut down or inaccessible due to insecurity. This has raised concerns over long-term psychological trauma and the erosion of education in the region.
In response to the crisis, community leaders are urging the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas and deploy a permanent military presence to restore law and order.
Humanitarian organizations and civil society groups are also calling on the Sokoto State Government to provide immediate emergency relief, including food, shelter, and medical assistance, to displaced families.
The Sokoto State Government has acknowledged the crisis and insisted that it is taking steps to restore peace. Colonel Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on Security Matters, said the government is conducting ongoing operations in collaboration with security operatives, which have yielded significant success.
As the dry season approaches and fears of increased attacks mount, the clock is ticking for urgent action. For the people of Tureta and Dange/Shuni, the return of peace, safety, and dignity is long overdue.
