The union's Zonal Coordinator, ASUU Nsukka Zone, Christian Opata, expressed frustration over the government's consistent breach of trust and agreements, describing its actions as "nauseating and unacceptable."
Opata noted that ASUU has been engaged in dialogue with the government for over a decade, with agreements being reached and timelines set, only for the government to renege on its commitments.
The union highlighted several contentious issues, including:
1. Renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government
2. Erosion of university autonomy
3. Withdrawal from collective bargaining principles
4. Refusal to revitalize public universities
5. Non-payment of withheld salaries and promotion arrears
6. Withholding of third-party deductions
7. Non-payment of wage increases
8. Starving universities of funds
ASUU also criticized the government's wasteful spending on committees and consultations, only to disregard their recommendations.
The union warned that it may be forced to take drastic action if the government continues to disregard its agreements and commitments.
"A stitch in time, they say, saves nine," Opata said. "We are aware that the government is deliberate in its actions, and we may be forced not to honour any meeting they summon until they show commitment."
