Mrs. Funmi Sesi, Chairperson of the Lagos NLC, made the demand on Thursday, referencing the recent minimum wage increases announced by the Imo and Ebonyi State Governments. She argued that the current ₦85,000 minimum wage in Lagos is no longer tenable due to the state's unique economic pressures, particularly in accommodation, transportation, food, and utilities.
Sesi emphasized that the time has come for an upward review of the minimum wage in Lagos, commending the governors of Imo and Ebonyi States for taking the lead. She urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to implement a higher wage for Lagos workers, stressing that they deserve better wages and decent working conditions that reflect the economic realities in the state.
The NLC chairperson welcomed the upward reviews in Imo and Ebonyi States, noting that they set a precedent for other states to follow. She emphasized that Lagos, as Nigeria's commercial capital, cannot afford to lag behind in ensuring workers' welfare.
Sesi called on the Lagos State Government to initiate negotiations immediately, stating that the NLC cannot wait to engage with the government to approve an improved welfare package for Lagos workers.
