The SOP was officially presented at a validation workshop held in Sokoto on Friday, organized jointly by the Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs from the three states, with technical support from UNICEF.
According to UNICEF's Chief of Field Office, Mr. Michael Juma, this initiative marks a significant milestone towards achieving faster and more efficient disaster management in the region. The SOP provides a detailed, step-by-step guide for humanitarian actors, ensuring clarity throughout the emergency response process, from initial trigger to final deactivation.
"The SOP outlines a clear framework for emergency response, including triggers and notification, lead agencies, activation processes, and alert mechanisms. It also covers search and rescue arrangements, team mobilization, evacuation protocols, and public communication," Juma explained.
UNICEF Emergency Specialist, Mr. Olayinka Afolabi, added that the SOP also establishes procedures for setting up state emergency operations centers, conducting joint rapid needs assessments, prioritizing responses, and mobilizing resources.
This comprehensive SOP is expected to enhance the effectiveness of emergency response efforts in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, ultimately reducing the impact of disasters and humanitarian crises on affected communities.
