Nigeria has been grappling with worsening food insecurity due to the removal of fuel subsidy, rising transport costs, and insecurity on major highways. These challenges have disrupted the movement of goods, leaving millions struggling with unaffordable food prices.
The initiative aligns with Tinubu's broader agenda of achieving food sovereignty, ensuring availability, affordability, accessibility, and nutrition on a sustainable basis. To achieve this, the government plans to introduce two key initiatives:
- Farmer Soil Health Scheme: to boost agricultural productivity
- Revamped Cooperative Reform Programme: to mobilize resources and empower rural farmers
Tinubu had earlier emphasized Nigeria's progress toward attaining food sovereignty in his June Democracy Day address, highlighting the administration's "Nigeria First" policy to consolidate market-driven growth and enhance local production.
