Army Chief Engages Babangida, Abdulsalami, Niger Gov on Security Strategy

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, recently met with former Nigerian leaders General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago. During these discussions, he reiterated the Nigerian Army’s dedication to improving security, refining operational strategies, and fostering stronger ties with critical stakeholders.

The meetings, held in Niger State, were part of efforts to enhance civil-military cooperation and support ongoing initiatives to tackle security threats nationwide. Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Director of Army Public Relations, shared details of the engagements in an official statement.

Lieutenant General Shaibu highlighted the Army’s focus on advancing training programs, refining military doctrines, and ensuring troops are fully prepared for operations. He provided updates on ongoing exercises at various Army training centers, designed to equip personnel with hands-on, mission-focused skills. These exercises also help evaluate the effectiveness of combat units and identify areas needing reinforcement or new formations.

Recognizing Niger State’s strategic significance due to its vast territory, the Army Chief emphasized the deployment of all necessary resources, including advanced technology, to address security concerns. He noted his personal connection to the state, having previously served there as a Training and Doctrine Commander, and described it as a place of deep professional and historical importance for many in the Army.

Additionally, Lieutenant General Shaibu conducted operational assessments at the 31st, 11th, and 18th Brigades in Bida to identify gaps and allocate resources to counter recent security challenges in parts of the state.

In response, Generals Babangida and Abubakar commended the Army Chief for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment. They praised the Nigerian Army’s longstanding discipline and operational effectiveness, offering their support and prayers for his success in navigating the country’s security landscape.

Deputy Governor Dr. Yakubu Garba, representing Governor Bago, thanked the Army for its proactive role in addressing Niger State’s security issues. He outlined ongoing challenges and expressed optimism that continued collaboration with the military would restore peace and safeguard communities.

These engagements reflect the Nigerian Army’s broader commitment to operational excellence, partnership with government institutions, and the protection of national security interests.
