While INEC had previously outlined long-term election dates in a document titled Election Management in Nigeria, 2015-2025, it stressed that these projections are not equivalent to a formal timetable. The Commission reiterated its commitment to adhering to legal frameworks, including the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022, which mandate a 360-day notice before elections.
INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, confirmed in a Friday statement that the official 2027 schedule will be released through verified channels when due. The public and media were urged to disregard unofficial sources and await updates from INEC’s official platforms.
Earlier, under former Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC had institutionalized a fixed election cycle: presidential and National Assembly polls on the third Saturday of February, followed by governorship and state assembly elections two weeks later. However, the Commission clarified that these dates remain provisional until formal announcements are made in compliance with statutory requirements.
INEC reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and lawful processes, warning against misinformation and assuring Nigerians of timely, accurate communication ahead of the 2027 polls.
