In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its leaders, the labour centre expressed grave concern over the worsening economic realities facing workers as the country enters 2026. Persistent inflation has severely eroded workers’ purchasing power, making it increasingly difficult for families to cope with basic living expenses.
The statement emphasized the need for an immediate upward review of workers’ allowances as a stopgap measure while Nigerians await the full implementation of a new National Minimum Wage expected in 2027, in line with existing labour laws.
The union warned against policies that place the burden of ongoing economic reforms solely on workers without adequate protection, stressing that Nigerian workers must not be sacrificed in the name of reforms.
The labour centre also called on workers nationwide to remain united and resolute, reaffirming its commitment to defending workers’ rights and welfare despite the prevailing economic challenges. Unity, it noted, remains the greatest strength in building a labour movement that stands firmly for workers and for Nigeria.
