Kebbi Gov Pledges Inclusive Education, Sponsors 35 Students Abroad for Medical Studies

Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, has vowed to break barriers in education by ensuring children from low-income families receive the same opportunities as their wealthier counterparts. His administration is determined to end the era where underprivileged students are sidelined, emphasizing that talent and hard work—not financial status—will define access to state-sponsored programs.

The governor made these remarks during a send-off event at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, where 35 Kebbi indigenes were celebrated before departing for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The students, selected through a rigorous merit-based process, will study medicine and pharmacy at a top-tier institution, fully funded by the state government.

Governor Idris, a former teacher, stressed that brilliance often lies hidden in marginalized communities. "History shows that some of the most gifted minds come from humble beginnings. Our scholarship scheme prioritizes merit, discipline, and dedication—not family connections," he said. He assured that the initiative is permanent and hinted at future plans to sponsor youths in aviation-related fields, including piloting and aircraft engineering.

Alhaji Isah Abubakar Tunga, the Commissioner for Higher Education, confirmed that the beneficiaries underwent thorough screening. Their tuition, living expenses, and other costs have been fully covered, removing financial hurdles. "This isn’t just about education; it’s about investing in Kebbi’s future leaders," Tunga added.

The event underscored the state’s shift toward equitable development, with the governor urging the students to uphold integrity and focus on their goals, promising unwavering government support throughout their academic journey.
