In a statement issued by spokesperson Mallam Yusuf Mohammed, MKT highlighted Yari’s trajectory from commissioner to two-term governor and now senator, noting his lack of visible private enterprises beyond ties to MA’AM Energy and mining ventures. The group argued that such wealth accumulation clashes with Islamic principles of equity, stating, “A genuine Muslim cannot ignore this exploitation of the masses.”
The statement criticized Yari’s recent acquisition of controlling shares in Geregu Power for over ₦1 trillion, calling it “outlandish” and disconnected from the needs of Zamfara’s struggling populace. It linked his financial dealings to worsening poverty and insecurity in the state, where illegal mining—allegedly tied to Yari—has fueled banditry.
MKT also referenced Yari’s ongoing investigations by the EFCC, ICPC, and DSS, expressing dismay that instead of refunding allegedly misappropriated state funds, he invested heavily in a private power venture. Zamfara, ranked Nigeria’s third-poorest state with an 82.7% multidimensional poverty rate, contrasts sharply with Yari’s personal fortune, the group noted.
The statement invoked divine accountability, urging Yari and other northern elites to heed Islamic scholar Sheikh Gumi’s recent critique of lavish spending amid widespread deprivation. It concluded by recalling Geregu Power’s announcement of Yari’s appointment after billionaire Femi Otedola stepped down, a move that has drawn public scrutiny due to Yari’s controversial political and legal history.
