Speaking to constituents in Kogi West during the holiday period, Karimi, who chairs the Senate Committee on Services, referenced the Supreme Court’s July 2024 judgment mandating direct federal allocations to all 774 local governments.
He condemned governors who disregard the ruling, labeling their actions unconstitutional and harmful to grassroots democracy.
Karimi warned that such governors could face legal consequences, as the National Assembly plans to prioritize enforcement through new legislation.
He highlighted the court’s nullification of governors’ control over local funds and the illegality of caretaker committees, stressing that the ruling aims to empower elected officials and improve service delivery.
Despite the clear verdict, Karimi noted ongoing defiance by some states. He recalled President Tinubu’s warning to APC leaders about potential executive action if non-compliance persists.
While acknowledging the President’s restraint, Karimi pledged parliamentary support, including retroactive laws, to address violations.
Accusing certain governors of misappropriating funds, he vowed to pursue prosecutions, refunds, and penalties. Karimi alleged that trillions meant for local development had been diverted, leaving councils dysfunctional and citizens underserved.
He echoed the Chief of Defence Staff’s concerns linking insecurity to ineffective local governance, claiming some governors treat allocations as personal entitlements.
The senator further exposed schemes where states siphon funds through fraudulent vouchers after deposits reach council accounts.
